Tom Johnson - Time Takes Odd Turns

After a long career as a psychologist, professor, and part-time musician, Dr. Tom Johnson is finally releasing his debut album, *Time Takes Odd Turns*. This collection of modern, original jazz compositions, performed by a full orchestra, spans decades of his life—some written over 40 years ago, others after 2012.

Growing up in Indianapolis, Johnson was immersed in music, inspired by his father, a trumpet player in big bands. He began studying trumpet in fifth grade and composition in high school. Despite his passion for music, Johnson pursued psychology, earning his undergraduate degree at Indiana University, where he also studied jazz composition. While balancing both fields, he continued his music education, earning a Certificate in Jazz Arranging and Composition from Berklee School of Music.

Though his academic career took center stage, with Johnson becoming a full professor and publishing over 30 articles in psychology, his love for music never waned. In 2019, he resumed serious studies in jazz composition, studying privately with Brent Wallarab and eventually enrolling in Butler University’s Master of Music Composition program. Johnson retired from teaching in 2023 to focus on music full-time.

In May 2023, Johnson recorded *Time Takes Odd Turns* with a talented group of musicians from Indiana’s jazz scene. The album showcases Johnson’s modern, complex charts, with compositions inspired by everything from experiments in jazz arranging to personal milestones. Notable tracks include "Naught Won," based on a major7sus4 chord, and "Simple Song," inspired by a hammered dulcimer he bought on vacation.

Other highlights include the 80s Suite, with pieces like "One More Time," inspired by Phil Collins' "Against All Odds," and "Lucky 13," written during a jazz arranging class. Johnson also pays tribute to influences like Snarky Puppy in "En La Casa de Los Perritos" and the Al Cobine band in "Ballad for the Al Band."

Although many of the compositions began as assignments or experiments, Johnson has crafted a sophisticated, lively debut album that reflects his lifelong dedication to music. With *Time Takes Odd Turns*, he steps into a new chapter as a composer, showcasing his talent and bringing Big Band into the 21st Century with fun and intriguing compositions. A truly refreshing modern sound while still offering the core of the Big Band era in every tune.
