Duran Duran - Danse Macabre

Duran Duran, the iconic band that help shaped the soundscape of the '80s, returns with their 16th studio album, "Danse Macabre." Having journeyed through New Wave pop, '70s funk, electronica, and a myriad of experimental sounds throughout their 40-plus year career, the band gets a bit spooky with this release.

Inspired by their 2022 Halloween show in Las Vegas, "Danse Macabre" weaves together a tapestry of eeriness across its 13 tracks. The album pays homage to the old-school, embraces the new-school, and dives into the covers-school, offering a captivating compilation of reimagined classics, inspired covers, and fresh original compositions.

The original quartet, comprising singer Simon Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and drummer Roger Taylor, reunites and collaborates with both familiar and new names. Original guitarist Andy Taylor, returning amidst his battle with prostate cancer, lends his talents alongside former guitarist Warren Cuccurullo. Renowned musician Nile Rodgers and rising star Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin who all contribute their distinctive styles to the album.

Standout tracks include "Black Moonlight," already hailed as the best new Duran Duran song in a decade. With a characteristic groove, jangly guitars, and spooky undertones, the song captures the essence of Duran Duran's classic sound, reminiscent of their collaboration with Mark Ronson on "All You Need is Now."

The band's cover of The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" stands out as an ideal marriage between Duran Duran's style and the quirky 1977 original. The funkier rendition, featuring collaborative bass work by John Taylor and Victoria De Angelis, showcases the band's ability to pay homage while infusing their own flair.

"Nightboat," a reimagined classic from their 1981 self-titled debut, takes center stage with a denser and lusher sound. The song, once overlooked, now serves as an atmospheric highlight, perfectly fitting the album's theme of shadowy strangeness.

As "Danse Macabre" unfolds, it presents a compelling musical journey that pays tribute to the band's diverse influences while exploring new sonic territories. With a blend of nostalgia, innovation, and a touch of the macabre, Duran Duran invites listeners to join them on this curious joyride through their multi-decade career.
